Biography
Before Dawn is an Appleton-based, high energy, post-punk / synth-rock / indietronica, somewhat ambiguously coupled duo. Both theater majors, Rob and Kate met at a party in college and stayed up talking until almost 6am, just “before dawn.” They hail from opposite coasts of Florida and formed Before Dawn during a ten year stint in Austin, TX, before moving to Los Angeles in their RV and forming the L.A. rock band, Jaglyonz. Most recently the duo has landed in the Midwest where they now have a basement rehearsal studio, sonic laboratory, and recording space. Before Dawn’s discography currently includes two full-length albums, two EPs and a handful of singles.
Rob and Kate immediately bonded over the post-punk bands of the 80’s that they were introduced to by older siblings and cousins, like Depeche Mode, Joy Division, The The, and Stone Roses. But they both also really loved the cathartic nature of punk bands like The Vandals, The Decendents, Fugazi, and Bikini Kill. They both also had a bit of a dark side that liked to sink their teeth into bands like Nine Inch Nails, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and ironically KMFDM. They were also both into a lot of 90’s alternative rock like, Pixies, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins and Violent Femmes as well as indie bands like Superchunk. Further they both really appreciated the theaticality and performance art of bands like Oingo Boingo, Alice Cooper and Talking Heads. Currently in heavy rotation for this duo are bands like The Faint, Phantogram, LCD Sound System, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Chuvrches, Joywave, Santigold, Bloc Party, Purity Ring and Foals.
